Healthcare technology and HL7 FHIR integration

We build HL7 FHIR integration, PHI-handling architecture, and the benefits administration systems that run on regulated health data. Serving Baltimore, the DC metro, and remote across the US.

What we do

What a FHIR integration has to get right

HL7 FHIR is a resource model, not a REST wrapper. A Patient, a Coverage, a Claim, and an ExplanationOfBenefit resource each carry a structure the target platform expects, an extension for whatever that structure leaves out, and a terminology binding for the codes inside it. Treat FHIR as a JSON schema to satisfy rather than a resource model to get right, and the integration passes a demo, then fails the first payer that validates it against the real implementation guide.

The work starts with the mapping: matching the source system's fields to FHIR resource profiles, and deciding where an extension is the honest answer instead of a workaround. Underneath the mapping sits the PHI-handling architecture it depends on: encryption, access control, and audit logging designed in from the start, for a benefits administration system built to hold regulated health data responsibly.

How it runs

An engagement runs across four integration phases.

  1. Discover

An engagement starts with the data and the regulatory boundary: which systems hold PHI today, which FHIR resources the target platform needs, and which consent and access rules govern each one.

  2. Map

Source fields get mapped onto FHIR resource profiles, including where a standard structure is enough and where it needs an extension. The mapping is documented as it's built, not reconstructed after the fact.

  3. Integrate

The interoperability layer gets built alongside the PHI-handling architecture underneath it: encryption, access control, and audit logging that can show who touched what, and when.

  4. Operate

The integration is validated against the target implementation guide before go-live, and what's handed off is something the client's own team can run and extend on its own.

What you get

FHIR resource mapping, documented

A working mapping from your source system to FHIR resource profiles, with the extensions and terminology bindings the target implementation guide requires, documented so your own team can maintain and extend it after handoff.

Encryption, access control, and audit logging

Designed into the interoperability layer and the benefits administration systems underneath it, not added as a compliance review after the platform already exists.

Boundaries

What this is not

Not a HIPAA attestation service. AGILE Services Group does not provide HIPAA attestation, certification or audit services, and does not act as a covered entity or business associate.

HIPAA is the regulatory context the work operates under, not a service sold on its own. Determining covered-entity or business-associate status is a legal question, for counsel to answer.

Track record

Who does the work

26 years in production software · federal delivery since 2014 (NOAA, HHS, FDA, VA, CMS, IRS)

As Chief Architect at a healthcare technology company, the firm's principal worked on HL7 FHIR integration, benefits-processing systems, and the PHI-handling architecture that regulated health data requires. That record is what this page draws on. More on his record.
